Getting Started

National Library of Medicine, MedlinePlus: Website that provides news and information on all types of cancer selected from a wide range of sources by medical librarians at the National Institutes of Health. Separate resource topics on specific types of cancer provide information on diagnosis and symptoms, treatment, prevention and screening, pictures and diagrams, coping, disease management, clinical trials, genetics, research, law and policy, dictionaries, directories, organizations, statistics, alternative therapy, nutrition and more. Much information in Spanish. See specific cancers including Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Lymphoma (includes Non-Hodgkin's), Ovarian Cancer, Skin Cancer, Uterine Cancer. Related health topics include Cancer Alternative Therapies, Cancer Chemotheraphy, Herbal Medicine, Mastectomy (includes Lumpectomy), Lymphatic Diseases (includes Lymphedema), Personal Medical Records, and Radiation Therapy.

Centers for Disease Control: Cancer: Website with news and resources on cancer, including Cancer Survivorship.

National Cancer Institute (NCI): Website with information on all types of cancer, research, clinical trials, NCI publications, and more.

National Cancer Institute Cancer Centers Program: Website with list of NCI Cancer Centers by State.

National Comprehensive Cancer Network Treatment Guidelines for Patients: Website with information on treatment guidelines for several major cancers. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), a not-for-profit alliance of 21 of the world’s leading cancer centers, is dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of care provided to patients with cancer.

(There are many libraries on campus; The Science and Engineering library is the best one for medical issues.) Community Breast Health Project: A non-profit, San Francisco Bay Area Resource Center dedicated to providing information and support to people dealing with breast cancer or with breast health issues.

Community Technology Alliance: An information and referral database for Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties, CA. Their mission is to end and prevent homelessness by linking and networking communities through technology.

Delaney's Place: A boutique in Soquel, CA, committed to enhancing the appearance and physical comfort of women faced with a cancer diagnosis. Services include professional bra and prosthesis fittings. Products include specialty lingerie, headwear, sleepwear for night sweats, year-round swimwear, oncology/radiation friendly skin care, and natural anti-nausea drops.

Human Care Alliance: A collaboration of over 60 nonprofit Health and Human Service Agencies serving Santa Cruz County, CA.

Mother's Living Stories Project: An effort to help mothers who have cancer to record their life stories and personal legacies for their children and loved ones. Ill mothers are paired with trained volunteer listeners to review their lives and record their stories. Located in the San Francisco, CA, Bay area.

Next Step (The): A boutique in Los Gatos, CA, for women who have experienced breast cancer and have had a lumpectomy or mastectomy; products include speciality bras, swimsuits, lingerie, hair and skin products.

Santa Cruz Public Libraries Community Information Database: The Santa Cruz City-County Library System's Community Information Database (CID) is a comprehensive database of agency resources available to people in Santa Cruz County.

Santa Cruz County Government: Official municipal site includes information about Santa Cruz County services, departments, meetings, events, and the community.

Stanford Cancer Center: A clearinghouse for information, based at Stanford University. Includes links, events, and local organizations.

UCSF Medical Center (The Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center): Information on the programs, services and research of the center and educational resources about breast cancer and its treatment.

Women's Center at UC Santa Cruz: The UCSC Women's Center affirms the dignity and diversity of all women. The Center continues and challenges feminist traditions by creating community space for all women and allies to achieve individual and social change.

Workforce Santa Cruz County: Employment opportunities and job listings from employers across Santa Cruz County.

Women's Cancer Resource Center: This Oakland, CA, center has a superb library and computer searching capabilities. Also includes local, state, and national links in women's issues and health; click here for an extensive collection of links on women's issues and health

WomenCARE: WomenCARE, located in Santa Cruz, California, is a community providing advocacy, resources, education and support to women with cancer and their loved one throughout diagnosis, healing, surviving, or dying. Services include free support groups, art for healing, a complementary treatment group, healing walks, a knitting/needlework group, a lending and reference library, and a writing circle. Individual support services for women with cancer are Sisters Offering Support (SOS) and the Peer Navigator Program (with Stanford University). Entre Nosotras provides free assistance for Spanish-speaking women with cancer.

Association of Cancer Online Resources, Inc.: ACOR is a non-profit organization that offers online support groups for all types of cancer.

Bethel Botanicals: Produces and distributes high quality natural and organic products for personal and household use, including the Healing Cream, which was developed as a natural and organic product for breast cancer radiation.

Breastcancer.org: A nonprofit organization dedicated to providing reliable, complete, and up-to-date information about breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Resource Center: A community site with basic, easy to read information, articles, questions and answers, chat rooms, books, and free e-mail.

Breast Cancer Action: Advocacy group for the prevention and cure of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Information Center: Website from the Feminist Majority Foundation with a wide range of resources on breast cancer.

Combined Health Information Database: A bibliographic database produced by agencies of the National Institutes of Health that provides titles, abstracts, and availability information for health information and health education resources.

Food and Drug Administration Oncology Tools: Website with information on new drugs for cancer treatment.

Healing Journeys: Website with information about the free annual conference, "Cancer as a Turning Point: From Surviving to Thriving," an event that addresses the psychological, social and spiritual aspects of cancer and other life-altering illnesses.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation: A non-profit corporation dedicated to the support of research and public awareness of inflammatory breast cancer.

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation: Website with information on breast cancer and on its mission to fund basic, clinical and translational breast cancer research and for innovative projects in the areas of breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment.

Lung Cancer Alliance: National nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for people liviing with lung cancer or at risk for the disease.

Mautner Project: Website of the National Lesbian Health Organization with resources including a report Lesbians and Cancer (PDF)

Mesothelioma Web: Website with information and resources on malignant mesothelioma, a disease in which a cancerous tumor grows on the mesothelium - the sac lining the internal body cavities.

National Breast Cancer Coalition: Advocacy group that lobbies at the national, state and local levels for public policies that impact breast cancer research, diagnosis and treatment.

National Ovarian Cancer Coalition: Website with information and educational materials on ovarian cancer, and a toll free ovarian cancer information line (1-888-OVARIAN).

Questions Are The Answer: Website of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality with information on how to take an active role in your health by preparing questions for medical appointments so that you can understand your condition and evaluate your options. The site has suggestions for questions, an online tool for building a personalized list of questions, and other advice.

Safe Cosmetics, The Campaign for : An advocacy group working to require the health and beauty industry to phase out the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems and replace them with safer alternatives.

Skin Deep: An online, brand-by-brand personal care product safety guide with in-depth information on 14,227 products, such as lotion, lip balm, deodorant, and sunscreen. A project of the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit research and advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C.

Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer: SPOHNC is a patient-directed, self-help organization dedicated to meeting the needs of oral and head and neck cancer patients. SPOHNC was founded in 1991 by an oral cancer survivor.

Susan Love, M.D.: Website from the author of Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book.

Women's Voices for the Earth: A nonprofit environmental justice organization working to empower women to create an ecologically sustainable and socially just society. Works to eliminate environmental pollutants impacting women and children's health.

Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization: Website in Spanish and English with educational information on breast cancer, coping and quality of life, and information on advocacy.
