WomenCARE has a New Home!

WomenCARE is moving to a new home! As you know, our organization has been working very hard and carefully to redefine how we operate so that we not only survive these current difficult economic times, but ensure WomenCARE’s future in the years to come. Part of our reorganization was to take advantage of the end of our three-year lease on our Santa Cruz office space and search out more affordable “digs.” And as of August 1st, we will be in our new home at 2901 Park Avenue, Suite A1, Soquel, CA 95073. Our phone number – and walk-in office hours – remain the same.

Will we be in cozier quarters? Yes. Will we still offer a safe and welcoming place to provide support services for women with all types of cancer, at all stages of the journey? You bet. As long as WomenCARE stays true to its mission, women with cancer in our communities – and their families – will receive the support they need.

Please help us “make our move!” We have an ever-growing wish list:

  • A new desktop copier with print, FAX and scan capabilities like the Canon Imageclass D480 (our poor old copier…the move might be its last straw!)
  • A small refrigerator for our downsized “kitchen space”.
  • Include WomenCARE’s shopping list when you’re out at Costco or Trader Joe’s which includes toilet paper, napkins, hot cups, cold cups, non-caffeine herbal teas, Dr. Broner’s liquid hand soap.
  • Can you be our “water bearer” for a year? Our clients love to make a cup of hot tea, or fill their water jugs, before their group or healing circle. Your $50/month “water bearer” donation would cover this for a year.

We’ll check back in with you when we’re in our new office – our wish list will certainly change and grow!

Most importantly, we are hoping to make our move with little to no impact on our operational budget and are securing in-kind donations and “pro bono” set-up services. Your tax deductible donation is gratefully accepted (Before August 1: 1001 41st Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95062. After August 1: 2901 Park Ave., Suite A1, Soquel, CA 95073) or donate online now. Healing Stories

A story telling class with long time storyteller and teacher, Erica Lann-Clark. Begins April 21st on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 1:00 – 3:00 Call to sign up: 457-2273. Our great grandmothers spent a lot of time in their kitchens. They cooked, canned food, made herbal medicines and talked and talked about their children, their partners, their dreams, their fears, their lives.

Get together with Erica to sit around the WomenCARE "kitchen" and trade the healing stories of our lives. The whole story of a woman's life has many, many pieces. Cancer is just a piece, albeit an important piece, of the story.

Come to listen, to share what you value, and to take care of yourself through crafting your story for others.

Driscoll’s Strawberry Associates Gives to Entre Nosotras

Fifteen families in WomenCARE’s Entre Nosotras program enjoyed a special holiday treat in December because of the generosity of dozens of employees at Driscoll’s. The families were ‘adopted’ by Driscoll employees, and the company hosted a lunch party at a pizza party in Watsonville where family members received gifts purchased by the employees. There were many happy kids – and parents!

In addition, Entre Nosotras Program Director Chila Correa was presented with a check for $1,700 for WomenCARE! Presenting the check – and the Driscoll’s employees who led the charge in making all this happen for our clients – are Norma Bravo, Luis Guerrero and Marilyn Martinez.

Our deepest thanks to Norma, Luis, Marilyn and all the Driscoll employees who gave so generously to WomenCARE’s Entre Nosotras families.

Video Speaks from the Heart of WomenCARE

WomenCARE's video, Further to Fly, is a deeply moving 13 minute video with an encouraging message from women with cancer to women with cancer, sharing words of experience spoken from the heart of WomenCARE. The video can be viewed at our office, checked out of our lending library, or purchased for a suggested donation of $10, which covers the cost of reproduction. Any donation above $10 will go towards the production of a linguistically and culturally appropriate video for the Spanish speaking population of Santa Cruz County. Call the office at 457-2273 to view or purchase the video.
