Staff Bios

Mary Kashmar comes to WomenCARE with over 17 years of non-profit experience with organizations in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Her commitment to working for women has guided her professional career. With an emphasis on issues of access, Mary has worked for non-profit organizations that help women and families find housing, advocate for women who are victims of domestic violence, and offer primary and preventive health care services to the underserved and the uninsured. Mary’s expertise is in fundraising and fund development, and she has designed programs for homeless services and community health centers. Originally from Santa Barbara, Mary has been land-locked for 30 years – her permanent move to Santa Cruz now provides her much-needed daily walks on the beach!

Allison Titley has served many roles, from Business Office Manager to Co-Director, with WomenCARE over the last five years. With the many hats she has worn over the years, Allison has served our local community with compassion and expertise. One of her greatest strengths is the ability to shift from business management to providing immediate and in-depth support to clients and their families. Her passion for mountaineering and her experience as a mother give her the strength and skill to stay in the moment.

LaVerne Coleman has worn many hats since she joined WomenCARE in 2001; she’s currently our Director of Programs. She came to us with 13 years experience as a Volunteer Program Director for The Santa Cruz AIDS Project, and, here, she is responsible for creating, implementing and managing WomenCARE’s various volunteer programs, which provide over 4000 hours of service each year. She also empties the garbage, periodically organizes and cleans the office closets, and she's adamant about recycling. Her love for working with WomenCARE’s dozens of volunteers is a reflection of her passion for other cultures and other languages. LaVerne’s greatest love is travel.

Cecilia “Chila” Correa has 33 years of experience in the non-profit sector and 36 years working for health related organizations. For La Clinica de Salud in Salinas and the Health Department of Watsonville she did outreach and counseling, as well as medical assistance to doctors. At Planned Parenthood and Headstart she worked as a counselor, and for 7 years she did outreach for the Breast Cancer Early Detection Program. Chila has been with WomenCARE for over 11 years, performing bilingual/bicultural outreach education as well as providing one-on-one support and support group facilitation to many of our Latina clients.

Board of Directors Bios

Michelle Ney, President of WomenCARE’s Board of Directors, came to WomenCARE as a client in 2006, joining the Board in May of 2008. She is originally from Los Angeles, where she worked in the entertainment industry and spent many fun filled years working on the lot at Universal Studios. She left LA seeking a better quality of life and moved to Santa Cruz in 1996, and now couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Michelle’s professional experience is diverse, ranging from Architecture and Construction Technology, Administrative and Facilities Management, and Marketing and Project Management. She currently works as the Executive Assistant to the CTO of a large consumer electronics company. Michelle is a lifelong animal advocate and has been adopting special needs cats since 2002, providing them a safe loving environment. In her spare time she enjoys socializing and helping out in her community in other ways. She enjoys volunteering backstage at the annual Santa Cruz Blues Festival.

Sue Brandy, secretary of WomenCARE’s Board of Directors, is a clinical social worker, wife, mother and grandmother who enjoys her work, her family and her various interests. She has over 10 years of service working in non-profit counseling centers in Santa Cruz County including service as the Director of the Parent Center in Watsonville. She has also been a support group leader for WomenCARE. For the last 20 years she has had a private psychotherapy practice in Soquel. Within her practice Sue not only deals with grief and chronic and life threatening illness, but also specializes in trauma treatment and response. In addition to her private practice, Sue is a partner in the Central Coast Critical Incident Team, which specializes in providing critical incident response for police and fire in Santa Cruz County and throughout the state. When not working Sue enjoys her time with family, is an avid reader, and a dedicated walker and long distance hiker.

Eva Brunner, who came to WomenCARE 5 years ago, began as the agency’s bookkeeper, getting the books in easy to follow, tip-top shape. She next came to the rescue in May 2008 when the previous board resigned and new board members were needed. Helping to get WomenCARE back on solid ground, Eva has volunteered many hours as Board Vice President. She brings an unwavering commitment to her roles with WomenCARE. When she’s not volunteering her time at WomenCARE, or working as a freelance bookkeeper for other local small non-profits, Eva is swimming, running, biking, hiking and flirting with the neighborhood cat, and generally trying to keep her garden alive and her house somewhat clean!

Katayoon Hakim is a licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist who has been practicing in Santa Cruz for 10 years. She was born in Iran and has lived in the United States since 1977. She once worked as a chemist in Silicon Valley and has volunteered for Hospice, the women’s shelter and WomenCARE. Katayoon joined WomenCARE's board to get more involved in the community. She believes healing is within us, and thinks the services provided through WomenCARE support women with cancer in achieving that. She also embraces "What do we live for if not to make life less difficult for each other?" George Eliot
